Registered domain names need to point to a computer called a server to work online. Servers stays online 24/7 to serve traffic for a domain name. Domain names cannot directly use a computer's address. Instead, a DNS service converts the name into a numeric IP address. This DNS service comes for free with domains created on Netz0.

Pointing your domain to Netz0 nameservers directs the internet to your website. Our built-in DNS makes this possible. DNS stands for Domain Name System, which is like a phone book for the internet. It connects your new domain name to the right place, so visitors can see your site or send you emails. By using the default DNS servers, you ensure your domain works smoothly with Netz0’s services.

Newly registered domain names will already be set up to use the default nameservers. But you can change this setting at any time following a few simple steps on your Netz0 account.

Set the Default Nameservers:

  1. Go to the Products section in the main menu, click on My Domains to see all your domains.
  2. Find the domain you want to update and click the Manage button.
  3. Look for the DNS Management tab and click it.
  4. Under Change Nameservers check the box that says DEFAULT NAMESERVERS.
  5. Click the Set Default Servers button to save the changes.

Once you do this, your domain will start using Netz0’s DNS servers. It might take a little time (usually a few hours, but sometimes up to a day) for the internet to catch up with the change. Don’t worry—this is normal! If you want to know why, please check the article on DNS Propagation.

When to use this option:

  • You’re setting up a website hosted with Netz0 and want all elements to integrate without any issues.
  • You want to use Netz0’s email services or other tools tied to your domain.
  • You’re new to Netz0 and want a simple way to manage your domain without complicated settings.
  • You want to use another service but still use our provided DNS services.
  • Your provider does not provide a DNS service for your domain name, or you need to point to an IP address.
  • You still don't have a hosting service, but you want to start using your domain by redirecting it to another site.

If you’re using another hosting provider or DNS, you might not want to use Netz0’s default nameservers. In that case, use custom DNS nameservers instead. Check out our article: “Point your domain to another service”.

Examples

Let’s see how two small businesses might use this feature:

Example 1: Saturn’s Tech Blog

Saturn Bolt, our friendly robot from Circuit City, runs a tech blog called “Binary Bits” at www.saturnsblog.com. He’s just signed up with Netz0 to host his blog and wants to make sure visitors can find it.

Saturn logs into his Netz0 account, follows the steps above, and sets the default nameservers.

Now, when someone types www.saturnsblog.com, they’re sent straight to his blog hosted on Netz0’s powerful servers. Saturn also uses Netz0’s email service, so his email (saturn.bolt@saturnsblog.com) works perfectly with his domain.

Example 2: Null’s Craft Store

Null Scratch, the mischievous marten from Pinewood Burrows, owns an online craft store at www.scurrycrafts.com. He’s moving his store to Netz0 to take advantage of their fast servers.

Null follows the steps to point his domain to Netz0’s default nameservers.

After the change, his customers can visit the store, and his email (null.scratch@scurrycrafts.com) is ready for orders and inquiries. Null loves how easy it is—he didn’t have to mess with complicated settings, which means more time for him to plan his next virtual forest party!
